Finding Nemo 33 – The Deepest Pool in the World
In Uccle, Belgium (just outside of Brussels) is Nemo 33. Nemo is a recreational and instructional center for scuba diving. It is also home to the world’s deepest pool. In the pool is a submerged structure that includes two large flat-bottomed areas; one at 16 feet deep, the second at 32 feet deep. There is also a large circular pit which descends to a depth of 108 feet. At the 32 feet depth there are several simulated underwater caves.
The pool is filled with a bit over 660,000 gallons of non-chlorinated, highly filtered spring water which is held at a temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
The entire pool includes windows in many areas so people can watch from the outside. Including while they are sitting at a bar or in the facilities Thai restaurant.
Belgian diving expert John Beernaerts designed the complex to be used as a diving instruction faicility, recreation area, and also as a film production facility.
Nemo 33 has been in operation since 2004.
The only thing missing is the fish! I would hate to have to find the quarters at the bottom of this pool, it could take days. I am curious to know what movies have been filmed using the pool. I can somewhat understand how a green screen type scenario would work well. I mean the person still has to be underwater and breathing bubbles for it to be believable, regardless of what’s in the background. If I ever find myself in Belgium I would like to take a dip in the pool. Just so I can say I’ve done it.
If anyone reading this has ever been there please share your story. If the story is too long for a comment send it to me and I will created an attached post.
You can see different areas of the pool in the images and video below.
