Touching Video of a Special Cat
I came across a great video of a special cat named Charley which led me to do a little bit of research. Charley has a condition known as “Cerebellar Hypoplasia.” I had never heard of this condition until this video, and apparently many others have not heard of it either. So I decided to help spread the word a little more, and of course share the great video of Charley.
Cereberllar Hypoplasia is the underdevelopment of the cerebellum in kittens, and can be noticed shortly after birth. It is a condition cats are born with, and cannot be treated. The cerebellum controls things like balance, muscle tone, and coordination. They had a good way of explaining the result in the video, as you will see - they say, “In other words his motor skills aren’t so hot.”
The cause of the cerebellum damage can be linked to things like; infection by feline panleukopaenia virus, or feline distemper during pregnancy.
Early symptoms of the condition include tremors, jerky movements. You may also notice the cat having trouble with standing due to their balance being off a bit. When they walk they may lift their paws higher than usually normal for a cat. They will most likely have trouble with jumping. Their head might be a bit shaky, and have trouble focusing their gaze.
Despite all of that they can live relatively normal lives. They will compensate as time goes by and things should get a bit easier for them. You will need to take some extra care to try and keep them safe by limiting what for them might be dangerous activities. Activities such as jumping on to things where their already compromised balance might be even more compromised and cause a fall. They will need some extra love too, but what pet couldn’t use a little more love?
Now onto the video of Charley the cat.

I too really liked the video. I always love stories like that. It makes me think of an image my wife recently showed me on one of her cute animal image sites. I will have to find it again and share it.
Whitney, I am sure there are many out there unfortunately. Seems like such a sweet cat though. Also if you are anywhere near Tulsa and in the market for a cat - we can definitely help. We have quite a few "rescued" ones living with us at the moment. Most of them very lovable.
