I’ll Take the Breast Milk Soup Please. . .
with Fettuccine Breast Milk Alfredo for the main course.
The Telegraph in England is reporting that Hans Locher, owner of the Storchen restaurant plans to use an unusual ingredient in his food.
Yep, my title gave it away. He will be serving soups, sauces, and meat stew that contain at least 75% of mother’s breast milk in his eatery that is located in the Winterthur resort in Switzerland.
He got much media attention after placing ads looking to hire milk donors. The starting wage is $5.40 (3 pounds) for 14 ounces of breast milk.
The Telegraph quoted him as saying, “We have all been raised on it. Why should we not include it into our diet?”
He has stated that he first experimented with breast milk when his daughter was born.
Locher added a tip for those trying to recreate his recipes at home, “Once can cook really delicious things with it. However, it always needs to be mixed with a bit of whipped cream, in order to keep the consistency.”
As if that wasn’t strange enough, get ready for an even odder story within the story. The food control authority of Switzerland did some research to see if they could ban Locher from selling the breast milk in his food. Rolf Etter of the Zurich food control laboratory said, “Humans, as producers of milk are simply not envisaged in the legislation.” He went on to explain, “They are not on the list of approved species such as cows and sheep, but they are also not on the list of the banned species such as apes and primates.
Let’s touch on Mr. Etter’s comments first. If I am reading this correctly then that must mean that cannibalism is perfectly legal in Switzerland. I bet that is a little known fact. It almost makes me want to call Locher for a reservation – name Donner, party of seven. Yes I know that is an old joke, but it fits this situation so well.
OK, now back to the main story.
You know, there is a fetish out there for nearly everything, and yes breast milk is one of them. I am sure the restaurant could stay in business just on the reservations of those with the fetish.
A recent U.S. survey, released in April, 2008, says that about 77% of new mothers have tried to go the route of breast-feeding. On a matter such as this I would imagine that the U.S. is behind the rest of the world that is much more traditional in many areas. That would mean the world-wide numbers are probably a bit higher.
Studies have also shown that breast-fed babies were healthier as adults, had less occurrence of adult obesity, and have tested with higher IQs.
Does this mean that Locher could be starting a world-wide trend?
Wouldn’t it make sense that if adults had a regular diet of breast milk that it might stimulate their minds and in turn raise their IQs? If this is true I know quite a few people that should have nothing but breast milk.
Is the “Breast Milk Diet” right around the corner?
Is this the answer to the healthcare crisis? Give everyone breast milk and they will be sick less?
Maybe some research money going toward a study on the effects of breast milk on adults should be done. Sounds like a better way to spend some money than many of the other ways they come up with.
What do you think about a restaurant that prepares its food using breast milk?
