Republicans Upset that Gustav Didn’t Pack the Punch Expected
I know it sounds strange, but I really do believe it is true for a few reasons. The biggest reason. . . Does anyone else think it is strange that the McCain – Palin ticket decided to pick the same day Gustav was to make landfall as the day to announce that Palin’s 17-year old daughter is pregnant? Personally I think it was done in hopes that Gustav would roar on for more than half a day in Louisiana and take attention away from the announcement. If that were the case it would have also shown that this time FEMA and the government was prepared this time, especially being so close to the anniversary of Katrina.
Instead Gustav, which was expected to make landfall at category 4 strength, made landfall at about 9:30AM as just a category 2 hurricane. The storm did cause quite a bit of damage, but nothing in comparison to Katrina, or to what they were expecting. It is a prime example of one failure leading to an extreme over reaction the next time something similar is about to happen. Sadly, I think this will lead to people ignoring some warnings the next time a storm approaches, and then it will turn out to be worse than expected. That just seems to be the way things happen. Instead of 1,600 deaths like Katrina, only seven are being blamed on Gustav in the U.S., as well as 94 deaths in the Caribbean.
McCain also used the storm for some good photo ops, while he made to comment that for today politics stop and life happens. Again, I think this was mainly to point out how prepared everyone was for the storm ths time.
I am sure tomorrow their politics as usual will start back up, while overnight tonight I am sure they are trying to figure out a way to shift attention away from the Vice Presidential nominee’s first-hand experience with the teen pregnancy problem we have in America. The last time I heard the numbers I believe they had gone down slightly, but it is still a major problem. What a wonderful message to send to America. (Disclaimer: This is not an actual quote, but one I am making up as I type.) “Sure honey, I don’t care about your pre-marital underage sex at all, but I am so very proud of you deciding to have the baby. Of course, if you had thought about having an abortion I would have had to ship you off to Siberia. Because, my own daughter making her own choice to have one would totally ruin my career and chances at being the token female VP. Whereas, with the unwed pregnancy and pre-marital sex will only piss off a lot of our religious supporters. They will get over it though because we are still so heavily against choices.”
While I am on the subject I would like to explain my comment a minute ago about, “the token female VP.” I think the only reason McCain and his advisors chose Palin was because they saw that Barack Obama did not choose Hillary Clinton to be his running-mate. They said to themselves, “Well, all these women voters are out and were ready to vote for her, so let’s put a different woman out there for them to vote for while they are mad at Obama for not choosing Hillary.” Why else would they go out and pick someone with little experience, no foreign affairs experience at all, and someone he has known for less than a year? Especially when his campaign’s biggest stance against Obama was his lack of experience. What they didn’t realize is, those Clinton backers weren’t out to just vote for a woman. They were there to vote for Hillary, her experiences, and her views. Not just because she has matching X chromosomes, rather than one X and one Y. They are some voters who know a lot of the issues, and know what ideals they want to vote for. This is not to mention the fact that her lack of experience could come back to hurt everyone, McCain after all would be the oldest President at the time of election if he somehow managed to win. What happens if he has some major health problem after a year or two in office? Then we are left with someone who was Mayor of a town with just 6,500 people in it, and less than two years experience as a Governor.
Anyway, in closing I just hope that the media don’t let things fade away too easily now that what I feel was the McCain campaign’s ploy to get attention away from the matter has fizzled off to just torrential downpours that might cause some severe flooding in places.
