A Special set of Quotes of the Day - October 20, 2008 - Friedrich Nietzsche

A Special set of Quotes of the Day - October 20, 2008 - Friedrich Nietzsche

Freidrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900)
Freidrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900) (Mental Illness 1889 - 1900 Likely caused by syphilis or brain cancer.)
It has come to my attention that people seem to really like what Friedrich Nietzsche had to say, or at least that I am being dragged into something that I don't really care much about. So for the person who pointed out how wonderful Nietzsche was, this is for you. Some of them I threw in just because I wanted to. Others are pointed at he or one of his few friends. They can decide which is for them and take them as such. Although many of them will of course think all are about them, while some may even be correct.

"A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything."

"A good writer possesses not only his own spirit but also the spirit of his friends."

"A subject for a great poet would be God's boredom after the seventh day of creation."

"All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses."

"And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

"Anyone who has declared someone else to be an idiot, a bad apple, is annoyed when it turns out in the end that he isn't."

"Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies."

"Faith: not wanting to know what is true."

"God is a thought who makes crooked all that is straight."

"I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time."

"In Christianity neither morality nor religion come into contact with reality at any point."

"In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule."

"Is man one of God's blunders? Or is God one of man's blunders?"

"It is not when truth is dirty, but when it is shallow, that the lover of knowledge is reluctant to step into its waters."

"No one lies so boldly as the man who is indignant."

"The best weapon against an enemy is another enemy."

"The most common lie is that which one lies to himself; lying to others is relatively an exception."

"There are people who want to make men's lives more difficult for no other reason than the chance it provides them afterwards to offer their prescription for alleviating life; their Christianity, for instance."

"Those who cannot understand how to put their thoughts on ice should not enter into the heat of debate."

"Today I love myself as I love my god: who could charge me with a sin today? I know only sins against my god; but who knows my god?"

"We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of voice in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us."

"Whoever despises himself nonetheless respects himself as one who despises."

"You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist."

And now a quote that reflects the main reason I wished to avoid being pulled into this all. . .

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. Is not life a hundred times too short for us to bore ourselves."

This one is so Orble:

"Those who cannot understand how to put their thoughts on ice should not enter into the heat of debate."

As is the closing quote.

These 'Special' posts do not look like abating in immediate to near future.

I align myself with this:

I am being dragged into something that I don't really care much about.

I guess fun is the key word. At least these 'Special' posts have added a bit of spice to the boredom that is Orble atm.

I'm glad you posted this one. I'm just putting down my immediate random thoughts, but I'll have a decent read of the quotes. Most of them are great.

Oh a certain someone has been boring us all with his thoughts on Nietzsche long before you even came on the Orble scene so I wouldn't take it personally.

Nice post. This is my favourite:

"I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time."

I've long wondered why a perfect, omniscient deity would be so precious about what a bunch of insignificant humans thought or didn't think of him.

Two guys,

If I could just address Ruby's comment?

Based soley on this comment of yours:

I am being dragged into something that I don't really care much about

I really don't care either. But I like word plays. So I hope this is taken in the special spirit that all these special posts are promoting.

Ruby,

I've never wondered why imperfect, blind bloggers would be so precious about what a bunch of insignificant bloggers thought of them.

It's the imperfections in their thought processes and their blindness that renders them so unworthy of praise.

Oh David I don't care what people think of me. But I do care when people try to inflict their view of the world onto me.

I'm a human, nothing about me is perfect, including my thought processes. My so-called blindness. however, is debatable. But until men can know the terror of a late period, then it is they who are blind to the thoughts and feelings of women.

That's what started this whole special message nonsense. And I think it apt that I end it there. Now you can bleat about God and beached whales all you like, but the fact remains, only a woman can know what s best for her. Everyone else should just stay the hell out of it. Including God.

Sorry for hijacking your blog with this Gene.

Ruby,

I've found that certain women in life know what's best for me more than I do myself, but if in your opinion men don't know a thing about what's good for a woman, or you, yourself, personally, that's your choice. Go for it.

And stay away from male gynos. What would they know about women?

yay!
Nietzsche quotes!
the only thin i like better than Nietzsche is semantics . . . oh and google . . .

i particularly like the 5th one you have up there but i think it makes more sense in its entirity:

“He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”

i think its particularly relevant to war and how people tend to lose sight of their original purpose once a conflict spans a long amount of time . . . their stance on the merits of the conflict becomes part of their identity and they lose the ability to be objective by trying to maintain this constructed identity

Hi and thanks for stopping by LHM, and Ruby,

Having your discussion here is fine, as long as it remains someone civil. lol Discussion is good.

I like quite a few of the quotes in there. Like I said, some I threw in just because I liked them.

Hi Morgan,

I somehow got two quotes crossed in there. At the end I would up with a second line after it, even though I previously knew the abyss line came after it.

One of my favorites in that list is
"In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule."

And Wkipaedia!

David,

I didn't say that men don't have any idea about what's good for women. I said only a woman can know what is best for her. There is a difference.

lol Ruby and Morgan. . . Wikipedia is good, most of the time. I have come across a few inaccuracies along the way. The beauty is, when you find them you can actually fix them if you want.

Morgan? You should post a short biography on Sagan.

Hi Wynona,

Well I didn't mean I didn't want to post the list of quotes from him, but I didn't want to do it for the reason i did.

I always love to see quotes from people past and present. Even those I might not necessarily agree with, it is always good to see what they said and why they said it. I do however like many of the Nietzsche quotes I used. I am glad you enjoyed them.

Hi Morgan,

Not sure if you saw it, but my Quote of the Day used a list of his quotes today.

A bio would be fun to read. Well, for some of us out here.
