Praying the Hurricane Away

Praying the Hurricane Away

Tonight on our local news here in Tulsa, Oklahoma they aired a story about a church in Houston, Texas that believes the power of prayer makes hurricanes go somewhere else.

The Windsor Village United Methodist Church in southeast Houston has prayed hurricanes away ever since Rita hit a few years ago.

Here is the prayer that members of the church read aloud together outside their church.

“We speak to Hurricane Ike, and we command the winds, and the storm to dissipate.”

They repeat this over and over many times.

The churches Pastor, Suzette Caldwell said, “We are people who do believe in miracles and healing and Godly intervention, but we didn’t know that we might have the authority and the power to effect the weather.”

The churchgoers will tell you that it has worked. Edouard slowed and turned right. Gustav went to Louisiana. Ike has turned a little south since they began praying this time.

Caldwell continued, “It’s definitely by faith that we know we have an impact.”

Thurman Hicks who attends the church said, “We know that we are a peculiar people. We believe when others do not. We know what hope is. We know what faith is.”

His fellow churchgoer, Rejeena Warren added, “Whenever one come in out direction we will always pursue it with prayer.”

OK, I am all for religious freedoms, an praying to who or whatever you believe in – but. I guess these people have a different god then those people in Louisiana, Mexico, or anywhere else they have supposedly sent a hurricane off to. I mean, why would prayer be effective in stopping a storm from destroying one place in lieu of destroying another? Would a God heed the prayers calls simply because they prayed and asked for it to hit someone else that isn’t praying? I am sure Louisianans have prayed quite a bit that they never have to go through what they did during Hurricane Katrina, how come that didn’t work?

As I got about halfway through writing this story I saw my friend CenTexGuy coincidentally just posted a story about Hurricane Ike approaching on his Texas Musings.com site. Ironically he jokingly said, “But knowing that we can’t stop them from coming (someone want to work on that), I’ve just learned to enjoy them. “ Little did he know that someone not too far away from him was already working on it.

Yeah. I'm with you on wondering about if they must have a different God.
I'm somewhat religious, but I would never hope to do this. Now that they've got God to listen to them on hurricane directions, now they need to go ahead and pray to end world hunger, poverty and crime.
Or maybe they could just being to understand God better, which is to say, his promise is of a better life after we die, not while we are here. If life were great here, we wouldn't need God.

And yeah as much as I like them, I don't wish a hurricane on anyone, especially not a major hurricane. Butif one hits, I'd prefer it hit less populated areas, or areas with better means to rebuild (for example the people praying in theis story probably have better resources and money to rebuild then deep south Texas or Mexico, where povery levels are high)

Long comment, sorry.
