Image of the Day - 9-22-08 - Possibly the most amazing picture I have ever seen.

Image of the Day - 9-22-08 - Possibly the most amazing picture I have ever seen.

What do you think of it?

Looking off deck of a ship with hundreds of rays in the water.
This picture is taken from the deck of a ship. Those are hundreds of rays in the water. I think it is simply amazing.

For those not reading the comments below -
Lilla has found out that this image was taken off the Northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula as the rays migrated to warmer waters.
Also, I have posted some more information that you can read by clicking here - More on Rays.

Completely freaky ... very sf.
Quite nightmarish in a way too.

I had no clue either, Morgan.

Wish I knew where the picture was taken.

Hi Bryn,

It does sort of have a The Birds meets The Abyss type of feel to it.

Hi Cibbuano,

I think if i were underneath them it might become a bit scary. If I could get past that it certainly would be an unbelievable experience.

Hi Hazel,

As I said earlier, I wish I knew where the picture was taken. It would be even better to be standing on the deck of that ship live. . . as long as i don't spot Rod Serling anywhere in the area.

Gene,

What do I think (all at once) ??

wow, how amazing!
do they do that often (and we just haven't seen it before)?;
Is it some sort of migration?
Are they sociable in some way/ do they posess culture?
Is it because of climate change?
Why don;t we learn more about them (and why was Irwin trying to) in what seemed like a random deviation form the norm for a man interested in crocodiles all his life?
Is there a connection between rays and land reptiles?
If he had lived, would this be called the Irwin cycle (because he had discovered soemthing interesting)?
What do they eat?
Whats their lifecycle and how do they create young?

on and on and on ... going now to google some facts, you bad boy, now I shall never get away form my machine today!

BEAUTIFUL Pic, thanks for sharing.

Lilla ...

I'd say whoa!
That IS quite a view!
I usually see this rays on TV, alone, or maybe 2, but hundreds heading for one direction?
Something's going on underwater, that's for sure.
And for them to flock together and migrate (that's what I think they're up to) means that it's somewhat unnatural.

I just hope it isn't some kind of nature warning.

Hi James and Armenta,

A friend of mine emailed me a group of amazing pics the other day. I have been sharing them the past few days if you click Image of the Day (up and to the left) you can see them. I still have quite a few from that one email left to go.

I am actually going to go right now and put one up for today. lol
