Rehab Stint Over After Three Year Stay

Elephant image
A four-year-old bull elephant who has been called “Big Brother” and “Xiguang” is finally going home after a three year stay on China’s tropical island province, Hainan.

The reason he was there was to detox from his heroin addiction. Now some of you might be picturing an odd picture of an elephant hiding in the shadows with an big rubberband tied around his one leg, and a needle being held by its trunk. It is much more tragic than that however. Illegal traders captured Xiguang when he was just a baby in 2005. They then fed him bananas laced with heroin in an attempt to gain control over him and make him do their bidding.

When police arrested the traders they set Xiguang free. A few months later it was found that he was suffering from heroin withdrawal symptoms. This is when he was sent to a wild animal protection center in Hainan for his not-so-celebrity rehab.

While in rehab he was treated with a dose of methadone injections that was equal to about five times the human dosage. After that they monitored him for an additional two years to make sure he had kicked the habit.

He seems to be doing well and is now clean and sober. He is now headed home to Kunming, the capital of his home province of Yunnan where he will live in a wildlife park.

It is wonderful that Xiguang has overcome the addiction, and great that they even gave him the means to do so, rather than just putting him down. That would have been the easy thing to do.

Now onto the traders that caused his heroin addiction – I believe they are the ones that should be put down. I know it might sound harsh, but perhaps getting them addicted to heroin, if they aren’t already, and then locking them all in the same room to withdraw together till they all fall to the floor to their own end.

Anyone that does something like that to an animal of any kind deserves no compassion or mercy in my opinion.

A more fitting end might be binding the traders together and releasing a herd of elephants in front of them, led by Xiguang. Let them have at his old friends.
