Graceland is the home of Elvis Presley located in Memphis, Tennessee. Graceland Mansion is located on a 13.8 acre property just a few miles outside of downtown Memphis. It was purchased by Elvis in 1957 for roughly $100,000.00 and it was where he died in 1977.
Today, Graceland is a museum devoted to Elvis memorabilia and history. It has been reported that between 500,000 and 600,000 people visit Graceland annually. Only the White house in Washington DC is more visited than Graceland. The home consists of 23 rooms including 8 bedrooms and bathrooms. The first level of the home is open for public tours but the upstairs and private quarters are not.
As one walks through Graceland one is taking a step back in time as the décor and furnishings are left just as they were when Elvis was alive. To many the word mansion is something of a misnomer because today the rooms of home classified as a mansion would be much larger. At Graceland the rooms are neither large nor expansive but they are quite ornate and filled with Elvis memorabilia. On display are many of on stage costumes he wore including his sequined jumpsuits. Priscilla and Elvis wedding attire is on display along with Lisa Marie’s many childhood toys. His famous gold lame suit is also on display.
Included in the public tour is the Living Room, Music Room, a Grand Staircase, Elvis’s parents’ bedroom, the Kitchen, Jungle room. Downstairs in the basement there is a Media room, and bar and billiard room. Going outside visitors can enter a Trophy room which showcases his records, his Grammys, gold records, awards, musical memorabilia and copies of checks for the various charities he supported.
Also outside is his racquetball court which now showcases his many costumes and has his music and movies continually playing during tour hours. Outside is also a fully functioning stable for horses. Also outside is the Meditation Garden which is where Elvis, his mother, father and grandmother are all buried. Across the street there is a building which houses his car collection and nearby that area his two airplanes are on display.
Graceland is a tribute to Elvis Presley and his many fans flock to the museum each year to enjoy and reminisce about the “King of Rock and Roll”. There one can also find and purchase many Elvis items that is sure to please those friends and family that could not make that special trip to visit Graceland!
