The Beginning of San Antonio

April 21st 2011 22:48
San Antonio is a city with a long rich history consisting of many layers one of which is San Antonio’s close ties to Spain and the establishment of many missions. There were 36 missions founded by Spain in Texas and they were established not only to serve the Church but also the King of Spain.

The missions served two purposes the first was to convert the Indians to Catholicism and the second was to encourage the expansion of Spain in the region. There were several native American tribes in the region including the Papaya and the Coahuiltecan which were nomadic and survived by living off native plants of the area. The other two were the Apache and the Comanche. The Comanche were the biggest threat to the survival of the Apache who were encroaching their territory from the North. Thus, the missions became a source of food, protection and survival of the three tribes, the Papaya, the Coahuiltecan and the Apache. The Papaya and the Coahuiltecan worked in the mission fields growing crops and building the missions and the Apache became the first native ‘cowboy’ tending to the cattle for the missions. Thus the missions of Texan had essentially free labor and also a wide variety of natives from which to spread Catholicism across the region

Fueling Your Grill

November 26th 2010 00:08
Fueling your grill is easy and affordable especially when you know what type of grill works best for you. If your favorite grill is of the popular charcoal variety then you should look for deals on charcoal briquettes. They can be found just about anywhere and in bags ranging from 5 pounds to 50 pounds. If you only plan to use the grill once or twice a season buy the smallest bag possible as the bags sits open and absorbs moisture if may become more difficult to start. Also charcoal now comes in enhanced versions such as quick lighting, and smoke enhanced flavors such as mesquite and hickory.

For those of using gas grills with canisters of propane these too are also very easy to use and the canisters are easy to find. They come in a variety of sizes from the little canisters you can purchase the little ones at your local discount or hardware store. For those who need the large refillable canisters it is best to two of them as you can always have one as a backup. Keep one on the grill and keep a second safely stored in a safe area so if the first one runs out they can be easily swapped out. Cooking entire meals on a grill takes a long time so always be sure you have enough propane on hand

Charcoal grills are traditionally the most popular grills in America. What kid in the States has not grown up having a hot dog cooked over the charcoal grill in their backyard or at the park? The aroma of charcoal and lighter fluid is as common as swings and slides at any given park. It is just something that we normally expect and enjoy.

Charcoal grills come in all sizes and shapes and are an easy take to the park or the backyard. They come in small enough sizes to grill just a few items or larger sizes to cook an entire meal. Just fill the grill with charcoal and let it preheat. Toss on your favorite food and enjoy a picnic just like Dad used to make

Kitchen utensil holders are a wonderful organizer for your kitchen counter top. They take all the spoons, peelers, spatulas, and whisks from the counter top and overstuffed drawers and place them in a modern, convenient kitchen gadget canister or cup.

Nothing is more annoying than preparing a big family dinner and has to stop and dig for just the right tool to help with your task. When using a kitchen utensil holder the tools are right there and all you have to do is select it from the canister

Give the Gift of a Memory

November 22nd 2010 23:33
Looking for a wonderful gift to give to share some memories with that special loved one? If so look no further than a recordable book. These books are such a wonderful gift to anyone special in your life. You would think a book is a book, a good story, an enjoyable read so what is so special about a recordable book? These books are truly a treasure. Think about this scenario a parent is in the military and stationed overseas, far away this holiday season. At home the child is given one of these books and reads the story out loud and the book records his/her voice reading the story. The service dad or mom receives this book with their child’s voice. So what is the value of that gift? You guessed it. The gift is priceless.

Or have a grandparent read a book and give it to the grandchild. Many years later, long after the grandparent has passed the child can still her grandma’s voice reading her favorite story. Another wonderful idea is to have a child read the story and the parent puts the book away. Many years later the book is taken out and shared with grandchildren. The grandchildren can now hear what their Mom or Dad sounded like when they were children. That gift is something one could never recreate

activity mat
Activity Mats are a wonderful accessory for helping you and your brand new baby bond. Activity Mats get the baby out of the crib and onto the floor on a mat where you can get down and interact with them. They are not so much of a toy but more like a reason to visually and verbally interact with your child. Granted, they have no clue what you are saying but you are giving them the opportunity to explore are whole new world. You point to objects on the mat, you talk and say what you see and the baby just takes it all in.

Many activity mats are made for giving baby some “tummy time” which is time not laying on their back in their cribs but slightly propped up on a pillow lying on their tummy. This helps develop their neck and shoulder muscles and the baby gets to see the world from a whole new angle

Portable Gas Grills

November 18th 2010 13:25
Portable Gas Grills are one of the most popular grills on the market. They come in a variety of sizes from small picnic table models to larger box type models. As long as you have the small propane bottles you can take them anywhere. Portable gas grills are often sleek and modern in appearance compared to the hibachi and charcoal grill versions
.
Gas grill are easy to use because they are so easy to start. Just attach the propane bottle, turn the grill on and light the burners. No need to wait for the fire to “catch” fussing with wood or charcoal. The heat is easily regulated with dials and you do not have to worry about the fire going out or the fluxes in temperatures as long as you have propane. Being able to maintain a constant temperature is important when grilling food that takes longer to grill. Gas grills work great for roasts, whole hams, turkeys, chickens and racks of ribs. You can set the grill temperature at a lower setting and longer cooking times with no concern of the fire going out

The Little Town of Lakeview, MI

August 15th 2010 18:26
The quiet little town of Lakeview, Michigan is approximately 50 miles North East of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The town is alongside beautiful TownLine Lake. It is a very small town whose focal point is of course, the lake. Many of the locals have homes on the lake that they enjoy Spring, Summer and Fall and then head South for the Winter. One really lovely thing about Town Line Lake is that it uncluttered, with the homes being nicely spaced apart and not a congested patch of homes like so many other little lakes throughout Michigan. The neighbors all know each other and it is a very warm and friendly town.

Located on one side of the lake, off Hillman Road is the United Methodist Campground for both rv’s and tents. Although it is owned and run by the United Methodist Church the campground is open to public and is extremely affordable. The campground has water and electric service but no sewers. There is a dump station that is right on the grounds. There is boating access along with a swimming beach. There are pavilions, a playground and there is also a picnic table and fire ring at every site. Sites vary but even our 40 diesel pusher had no trouble backing into a remote space. The roads in the campground are narrow and sandy but we just took our time and were able to maneuver through the park. The site was sandy, surrounded by trees with a lovely view of the lake. Many of the sites are similar to ours

Are You Ready for the Impending Zombie Attacks?

Still pic from Michael Jackson's Thriller video
It is a legitimate question. At least some people think so. I for one am close to believing. I mean just look at John McCain, did you see him wandering around the stage at the last debate? I think he might secretly be a zombie.

Dung Bunnies Anyone?

Dung Bunnies Anyone?

I came across an, umm, lets say interesting site recently. It was called Dung Bunnies. An artist named Susan Bell who normally specializes in “traditional wildlife” paintings used former New York City Mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Gulliani as her inspiration for something a little bit different. She had a problem, and found a solution.
